Following Jesus while leading people.
Lessons I am learning about following Jesus while leading people, teams, ministries, and organizations entrusted to our care.
I was sixteen when someone at the McDonald’s down the street decided I could be trusted with the back drive thru. I did not know much about leadership, but someone gave me responsibility, trusted me with people and a process, and expected me to figure some things out.
A lot has happened since then. I have led in law enforcement, churches, ministries, teams, and organizations, while also learning what it means to be a husband and father. The titles have changed and the responsibility has grown, but after all these years I still feel like I have only scratched the surface.
Most of what I know about leadership has been learned while doing it, through successes I am grateful for and failures I would rather not repeat.
The people who make up the Church that he entrusts me to lead bear the fruit of my ability to follow him.
That conviction keeps changing the questions I ask about leadership. Before asking how to get people somewhere, I have to ask whether I am actually following Jesus and whether I recognize where he is leading.
Some of the people who have helped me most were simply a few short steps ahead and willing to turn around and tell me what they were learning. That is what this section is for.
